CELEBRATION — A “Special 90’s” birthday party was observed Friday at Ricker Plaza in its community room. Attending were many resident friends of the three celebrants. Anxiously awaiting the cutting of the cake are, from left: Viola Adair, 92; Bertha Reed, 93; and Mabel White, 97. Entertainment was provided by the group. “Sweetwater.”

 

100 Years Ago – Feb. 9, 1916

 Eggs — Chester Nickerson of Hodgdon has a flock of 50 Barred Plymouth Rock pullets that during the month of January laid 73 dozen eggs, which sold for 40 cents per dozen.

 Ice — While other sections of the state are having serious trouble harvesting ice on account of the mild winter, Houlton ice men are harvesting large quantities of extra quality clear blue ice two feet thick.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 6, 1941

 Carnival queen — Miss Tressa Braun, Pleasant Street, a senior at Bates College, was chosen one of six attendants of the Bates Carnival Queen, who will be crowned tonight at a dance in her honor. The queen and her court will preside over all the events of the carnival, which began today and will continue through Feb. 9.

 Supper — Approximately 225 people attended the annual Junior Charity League cafeteria supper and games party held last Wednesday evening at the Northland Hotel, when the sum of $160 was netted to be used for the benefit of underprivileged children in the Houlton schools. Jack Quigg, traveling salesman for McKesson & Robbins Company, was the winner of the lucky chair prize.

50 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1966

 Specialist — Airman David J. Ryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L Ryan Sr. of Island Falls, has been selected for training at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, Calif., as an Air Force language specialist. The airman, a 1963 graduate of Island Falls High School, recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. Airman Ryan attended the University of Maine.

 Talent show — A Ricker Classical Institute senior, Miss Sally McCluskey, daughter of Mrs. Dorothy McCluskey of New Limerick, has received a $75 savings bond award as runner-up in this year’s teen division of the Spotlight on Youth contest sponsored by WLBZ television in Bangor.

25 Years Ago – Feb. 6, 1991

 Students — Four students were selected by Principal Woodrow Dunphy and the teachers at Hodgdon High School for January. They are: grade 9, June Addington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Addington of Linneus; grade 10, Michelle Little, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Little of Linneus; grade 11, Lee-Anne Nesbitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Nesbitt of Hodgdon; and grade 12, Terri Reeves, daughter of Mrs. Cindy Reeves of Ludlow. The students have proven to be polite, considerate of others and to be all-around good students.

 Books — Mrs. Nancy Ellis, Hodgdon elementary school librarian, accepted on behalf of the school several books from Arthur Howell of the A. E. Howell wildlife refuge in North Amity. The total value of the books presented to Aroostook and Washington county schools through the past several years is $12,000.
