Island Falls Notes

This past week has been quite quiet, maybe due to the fact that the weather hasn’t been all that nice.

Jaime and Stephanie Connelly did return a few days ago from a trip to Texas and while there they missed all the mean weather we had while they were away. They were very happy, though, the day after returning, to be able to see a small herd of deer in my backyard, which adjoins theirs. This was about noontime and there were 10 deer milling around out by the woods. Among them there must have been at least five little ones, as they were having a ball chasing one another all over the place, then darting off into the woods, to come out again and begin all over again.

It was quite a performance and must have lasted about 20 minutes before the grown-ups decided enough was enough and off they all went back into the woods. I haven’t seen them all together like that since, but am sure they are all around as the bread and apples disappear every night.

My driveway and the walk out to the barn is now quite icy, so I will have to tiptoe very carefully when I venture out to feed the deer and the birds. I have quite a few juncos, along with the finch and chickadees, and the cardinals still show up every day — early in the a.m. and late in the p.m.

I now have three pesky gray squirrels that do a job on eating all the sunflower seeds. I can’t seem to discourage them one whit, so I run out to refill the feeders once they all take off. They even eat up all the peanut butter and lard mixture that the little birds love, so I make sure there is plenty for them once the squirrels are gone.
