Moosestompers event winners announced

HOULTON, Maine — The 20th annual Moosestompers winter carnival featured a number of contests and events to challenge people. The following is a recap of those contests.

Category winners in the Moosestompers Ice Fishing Derby were:

• Togue — 1, Darren Crane 3.80 pounds; 2, Jake Cowperthwaite 3.73; and 3, Matt Hovey 2.47.

• Trout — 1, Chris Silverthorne, 2.97; 2, Glenn Tarr, 2.74; 3, Bruce Harvey, 2.10.

• Pickerel — 1, Kendra Kneeland, 3.18; 2, Bruce Harvey, 3.03; and 3, Gage Finnemore, 2.95.

• Perch — 1, Chris Holmes 0.13.

Kids Age up to 10 — 1, Ashton Faulkner, 2.18 pounds; and 2, Payton Donahue, 1.51 pounds.n the Kids ages 11-16, winners were: 1, Davan Thornton, 2.79 pounds; and 2, Carter Bartlett, 1.18.

The Cardboard Box Racer Contest challenged area youths to come up with creative designs for their sleds. Awards were given in the following categories:

• Most Creative — 1, Cloey Nightingale; 2, Haley and Hannah McGary; and 3, Daniel Frye.

• Most Spirit — 1, Johan Hiltz and Anton Mowery; 2, Noah Kruy; 3, Kaylee Hayes.

• Most in a Box — 1, Autumn Quint, Kaydence Acott, Caleb Acott, Hunter Quint and Riley Fitzpatrick; and 2, Chase Hetherington.

The Moosestompers Game returned this year with human dog sled races and snowshoe races. In the dog sled races, the team of Mataya Pinette and Easton Britton edged out the team of Kealey Britton and Riley Sawyer.

In the snowshoe race, Becky Day and Julie Delano tied.

A collection of antique and vintage snowmobiles show, sponsored by Houlton Powersports and RV Center, had people cast ballots for their favorite sleds. Results were: Tom Peters, Presque Isle (People’s Choice); Ted Russell, Linneus (Vintage Single Cylinder); Tom Peters, Presque Isle (Vintage Twin Cylinder); Timmy Guerrette, Caribou (Oldest Vintage Snowmobile); and Jim Leighton, Limestone (Vintage Open Snowmobile).

At the Men’s League Basketball Event held at the Gentle Memorial Building, Calais beat Houlton 105-101 in the All-Star Game. Brandon Tomah was named the Most Valuable Player. Sam Henderson won both the free throw contest and 3-point shoot-out.

On Sunday, the children’s’ snowmobile races proved to be a popular new addition as the youngsters did timed races in the 120cc division. Carter Wiggin of Carmel won the event, while Austin Witham of Levant was second and Brayden Thibodeau of Caswell was third.
