DEBORAH LIPSKY and husband John of Sabbath Day farm in Linneus have handicapped farm animals, nurturing each back to health, and have invited handicapped persons and children’s groups to visit the farm for therapy. They hosted children from New Horizons to acquaint them with the care and love of animals on the farm and treat them to a ride on a pony. In another program they took a small animal to visit at area nursing homes.

 

100 Years Ago – Feb. 23, 1916

 Storage tanks — The Putnam Hardware Co. put into position, at their warehouse on Bangor St., two 10,000-gallon Bowser Steel Storage Tanks to be used for the storage of kerosene oil and gasoline. The tanks each weighed six tons, and were put into place by contractor J.B. Brewer.

 Snow storm — Saturday’s snowstorm was by far the heaviest of the season. Over 12 inches of snow fell and together with the wind made it a most disagreeable day to be out of doors. All trains on the B&A were belated and much damage to the telephone and telegraph wires resulted from the storm.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 20, 1941

 “Gone With The Wind” — Stressing that “nothing has been cut but the price,” Manager Francis J. Gooch of the Houlton Theater promised that moviegoers who saw “Gone With The Wind” when it appeared here in February would witness exactly the same celluloid masterpiece that thrilled hundred of thousands with it first was shown last year. Afternoon prices are 25 cents for children and 40 cents for adults.

 New carpet — Mrs. Ward Ingraham and Mrs. Elmer Ingraham were joint hostesses at a benefit Valentine Tea one Friday afternoon at the home of the former on Court Street, the proceeds being used to buy a carpet for the new church in New Limerick.

50 Years Ago – Feb. 24 , 1966

 Travelers — During the coldest weekend of the season, with temperatures not rising above the zero mark, the following four took a snowsled trip to Quebec: Earl Stoton and his Johnson Ski-Horse, Gerald Holmes and his Ski-Horse, Dick Hamilton and his Ski-Daddler, and Carl Hagan and his Sno-Jet. Their round trip on the sleds was for nearly 250 miles, and required 26 1/2 hours of actual traveling time.

 Tea — Good Citizenship candidates and their workers were to be honored guests Monday afternoon at an annual tea served by the Lydia Putnam Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This tea was served at the home of Mrs. Douglas Lowrey.

 

 Thank you — Nancy Ketch, executive director, on behalf of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, presented a plaque of appreciation to the Houlton Fire Department, accepted by firefighter Francis Grant. The presentation, made during the annual banquet of the chamber, was in recognition of the volunteer firefighter’s participation in placing Christmas decorations on the poles with no charge to the chamber.

 Ninja Turtles — The Teenage Mutant Turtles were coming to Houlton on March 3 at the John Millar Arena, to participate in the third annual “Skate for Heart,” sponsored by Houlton Regional Hospital and the Houlton Recreation Department. All four of the Ninja Turtles were to make appearances at the arena, including Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo. The turtles would skate and play games with children participating in the Skate for Heart.
