HOULTON, Maine — A 32-year-old Houlton man was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly beating another man following an altercation.
According to Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna, Leonard Devoe, Jr. was arrested for aggravated assault and violation of bail conditions following an early-morning incident at 8 Maliseet Drive.
Police were called to the residence at 5:08 a.m. for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found one individual with what appeared to be severe head and face injuries, and a second individual with a possible stab wound.
Devoe Jr. reportedly beat a 32-year-old Mars Hill man during a dispute over an alleged theft of an electronic cigarette.
“During the investigation, it was determined that all parties had been drinking and an allegation of a theft had occurred,” the chief said. “An altercation ensued and the alleged suspect was beaten by a family member of the theft victim. During the assault, the alleged suspect displayed a knife in self-defense and the attacker was cut.”
McKenna said the injury to Devoe Jr. was not a stab wound, but resembled more of an abrasion and did not require medical attention.
The alleged thief was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for his facial injuries and was still being treated at the hospital on Monday, the chief said. Police are not planning on charging the Mars Hill man with any crime. A third individual at the home was also not charged in the incident.
Devoe Jr. remained at the Aroostook County Jail on Monday afternoon.
