Island Falls Notes

Hopefully, we have just endured another nasty batch of weather for the last time this winter. Pouring rain on top of a couple of inches of snow has made my driveway pretty icy in spots and has made my backyard a great place for the deer to trot across in search of food.

They don’t sink into the snow as before as it is now firm and solid.

The King-Mitchell VFW Post 7529 held its monthly supper on Feb. 20, and despite the poor weather that day, there was good attendance to enjoy the roast pork and ham supper, with all the fixings. This was prepared by chef Grey Hawk and his assistants, Cathy, Mariette and Margaret Phillips, and if all goes well, there will be another public supper at the VFW hall March 19.

According to the latest weather report we are due some good, warm weather soon. I still have lots and lots of birds now, and in just the last few days have seen several grosbeaks to add to the growing numbers. They all seem to really enjoy the mixture of peanut butter and lard and I am usually outside a couple or three times a day to put it out for them all.

I watched the male cardinal for at least two minutes the other day. He didn’t seem to be in a hurry to rush off, as usual, so I got a real good look. The female usually arrives after he leaves but doesn’t linger very long.

I watched two gray squirrels dashing around on the crust out back, probably looking for nuts they have put someplace.

At noon today, I had a herd of nine deer come out of the woods and they roamed about, some of them coming quite close to my picture window, and then they all decided there wasn’t anything good where they were and all took off slowly towards the woods, where they all stood munching on whatever was growing there beneath the trees
