HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Rotary Club met on Feb. 29, for its luncheon meeting and had a guest speaker hosted by Matthew Tribou. Regina Miller spoke to the club about her position at Tate and Lyle in Houlton.

Tate and Lyle originated in the United Kingdom in the year 1921. The company has grown to 4,300 employees and sales totalled $2.7 billion last year worldwide.

The company is a leading global provider of starch. This product is provided to companies such as Heinz, Coca Cola, Delmonte, Campbell and other companies as a food additive. Seventy percent of their starch goes into foods and beverages.

Starch has key components. Tapioca is used by Tate and Lyle imported from the far east. Potatoes are used that are imported from Europe. Corn is also used from the Midwest. Forty different varieties of starch are manufactured to be used in food for human consumption, animal feeds, industrial purposes, farm fields and waste.

The Houlton plant was built in 1962 by Morningstar Paisley contractors. A.E.Stanley purchased the facility in 1988. Thirty-five employees run the operation in Houlton, which is smaller than most of Tate and Lyle sites, but the starch produced is well known for its quality.

The company is ecologically sustainable and will soon be non-GMO certified.

Safety is very important to the Houlton facility and when meetings are scheduled this topic is always on the agenda. In twenty and one half years no accidents have occurred.

Regina has been with Tate and Lyle for four and one half years. She has four roles which are safety coordinator, brand ambassador, SAP operating system specialist, training others in this area, and general office manager.

Regina moved to the area from Bangor. She raised two children and enjoys eight grandchildren. She is the partner of Sargent Kris Miller.
