Snow Drag races cancelled due to lack of snow

HOULTON, Maine — Due to the lack of snow this winter, the second annual Snowmobile Drag Races planned for Sunday at Houlton International Airport have been cancelled.

“There is no snow at the airport,” said Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce. “We contemplated finding some snow and transporting it there, but the logistics of it did not make sense.”

The drag race track is a 660-foot strip, and hauling in that much snow would not be cost effective, she said.

Much can change over the course of a year. Last winter, the drag races were held during a blizzard with about 250 spectators and 35 sledders competing. The event was so popular, that Chamber officials hoped to make it a yearly occurrence.

“We held off until the last minute because we really hoped, and wanted, it to snow,” said Torres. “We kept hoping for that one big storm to come, but it didn’t happen.”
