Ark Animal Sanctuary

About a week ago we took in a pregnant female that was approximately 9 months old. Her name is Betty Mae. A few days after she arrived she went into premature labor the worst part was she didn’t even have any milk.

Betty Mae was in labor for 12 hours. It was very long and difficult labor, but she finally delivered four stillborn babies. I was with Betty Mae when she delivered and my heart broke for her. No cat should ever have to go through something like this especially when they are just kittens.

Betty Mae’s problems did not end there. Over the next couple of days she spiked a temperature of 104. It was clear that something was not quite right. Betty Mae was rushed to the vet, they found that her uterus was very enlarged and they also put her on antibiotics. While she was there they also spayed her. Betty Mae is back home with us and resting comfortably. I am hoping that everyone reads this and takes away one very important message.

Neuter and spay your pets, that is the only way to eliminate all of the unnecessary pain and suffering some of these animals go through. Betty Mae is a beautiful cat and I can tell that she has had much love in her short life but sometimes just love is not enough.

Betty Mae’s babies will be buried at the sanctuary. We at the Ark believe that an animals end of life is just as important as the beginning. All animals that pass in our care are either buried at the sanctuary grounds or cremated.

They are handled with the utmost respect and wrapped in their favorite blanket, we keep their collars as a memorial and then we quietly lay them to rest. No one at the Ark is licensed to euthanize nor will we ever be. We leave that to the vet. Our vet is awesome and if we call in the middle of the night she will be there. That means a lot. Animal rescue is not 9 to 5 and she understands that, we are fortunate to have such a wonderful working relationship with her and her staff.

Many of you have had the opportunity to meet Aldo our blind dog. Aldo underwent surgery on Thursday and had his eyes removed. They were becoming painful and of absolutely no use to him so now they are gone.

What a difference it has made in his personality , he is now a happy go lucky dog with no more pain. Aldo is recovering quite nicely and in a few weeks will be 100 percent. Look out world Aldo is going to make a big splash in the world a little thing like no eyes is not going to slow him down. We will keep you updated on his progress.

Between Betty Mae and Aldo our vet bill came to a little over $800. But no worries our bake sale last weekend brought in $1,100 so that more than covered it!

Please stay tuned to our Facebook page for upcoming fundraisers. Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
