WESTBROOK – Ronald I. Morton, 77, passed away on March 12, 2016 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Ron was born on April 4, 1938 in Island Falls, ME the son of the late Wallace Ivan and Madeline (Sanders) Morton of Oakfield, ME.
Ron grew up in Oakfield; raised his family in Windham and Raymond and most recently resided in Westbrook. Ron worked as a cook and correctional officer at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham for 20 years. He dedicated most of his life to Public Safety working for Windham Police Dept., Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Suburban Security, Raymond Fire/Police, Westbrook Fire/Police and most recently served as a volunteer at the Westbrook Police Dept.
Ron was most known for his sense of humor and genuine care for other people. He had the ability to make other people instantly feel comfortable and everyone who met him always commented on what a special man he was even if they only met him briefly. He loved spending time with family and had a special bond with his great-granddaughter, Kyleigh. Ron loved going to his camp “trailer” in Oakfield which you could always find him talking about. He loved old-time country music; spending time outdoors; watching the birds, squirrels, turkey and deer in his yard; hunting, fishing, boating, and tinkering on anything he could get his hands on. He enjoyed spending time over the years having coffee with his buddies every morning at various locations, most recently at Westbrook Dunkin Donuts. He was a member of the Raymond Village Church and also loved attending services and going to bean suppers at the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church.
Ron was predeceased by parents, Wallace and Madeline (Sanders) Morton; brothers, Dennis and Dean Morton; and son, Wallace Morton. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Morton of Westbrook; daughter, Marilyn Sawyer and her fiancé, Brian Lindsay of Lincoln; son, Thomas Morton of North Berwick and his children, Wallace and James; daughter, Lynda Adams and her husband, Shawn of Westbrook; granddaugher, Heather Caston-Talbot and her husband, Christian of Westbrook; grandson, Justin Sawyer and his girlfriend, Lauren Booth of Portland; great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Caston of Westbrook; sisters, Joanne Rockwell of Monticello and Christine Botting of Oakfield; and his beloved cat, Jeter.
Ron’s family would like to thank the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the special care they gave to Ron in his last days and to the staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital and the MMC Cancer Center.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, March 18, at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 20, at North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Interment will be private.
