Island Falls Notes

Everything has been very quiet this past week. The snow is slowly melting from all our lawns, the weather appears to be getting a bit warmer and the mud is beginning to stick to your shoes and thus bring a hint of the mess there can be when it really gets warmer, and everyone can get out to do spring clearing in their dooryards.

I was a visitor the other day at Charlene Webb’s and she was in the process of making a large chicken pot pie for friends who were coming for supper. As they were coming from Houlton they now didn’t have to worry about any snow arriving, or sleet or rain, so maybe the good weather will hold and we’ll all just have to relax and enjoy it all.

I finally spotted a nuthatch the other day and only saw one or two grosbeaks in a whole week. I still have the pair of cardinals arriving for their meal every day. I have to be there around 6 a.m. or about 5:45 p.m. as they apparently like it when it is less busy, although the small birds flitting about them don’t seem to bother them any.

I had a large flock of starlings arrive one noontime. They settled on my front lawn for a few minutes, then, with a swoosh, all took off at once for parts unknown.

I hadn’t seen any deer for a week and one day this past week had seven show up. They wandered about, grazing on the bare ground around the trees, then up to the house where I had put the bread and apples, then back to the woods they went. A mother and two little ones returned and the two younger ones had a great time playing — running, jumping, butting heads and raising their hooves as if to fight. This lasted for about 15 minutes, then the mother came out and put a stop to it and herded them both back into the woods and to bed, apparently.

I am glad they all seem to like my backyard, and I certainly enjoy watching them all from a safe distance that doesn’t cause any alarm that would frighten them into dashing off.
