Outdoor Ed program receives donation from First Settler’s Lodge

WESTON, Maine — Wayne and Denise Smith, owners of the First Settler’s Lodge in Danforth, wanted to find a good home for a large inventory of well-maintained athletic equipment.

The lodge owners had a vast assortment of cross-country skis, boots, poles, and several commercial-grade exercise machines that were not getting used so the Smiths decided to offer the equipment to East Grand School, where Physical Education instructors Tammi Matula and Dave Conley could put it to better use.

The equipment will enable the school to expand its offering of outdoor experiences for its students, as well as enhance student fitness programs in PE and extracurricular athletics.

The Outdoor Ed class, led by their instructors, used the skis donated by the Smiths to make a cross-country journey up to the lodge, which sits on a ridge overlooking East Grand Lake. There, they enjoyed hot chocolate and looked out at the scenic beauty of East Grand Lake and Mount Katahdin.

First Settler’s Lodge is a locally owned Bed and Breakfast located in Weston.
