Head librarian, Rebecca Drew, has recently informed me that during the month of April, for every blue carry bag bought at Houlton Shop ‘N Save grocery store, the Katahdin Public Library in Island Falls will receive $1. This will help the library’s income and also reduce the use of plastic. Therefore, I hope many will take advantage of this effort to help keep our library open to the many who enjoy what the library has to offer and, no doubt, reduce the use of plastic to carry home our groceries.
On Easter Sunday John Stevens, Linda Lepew and Riva attended the Easter Sunday dinner at the VFW hall in Stacyville along with a great many others who also took advantage of the good home-cooked meal instead of toiling in their own hot kitchen on Easter Sunday. It was a traditional Easter dinner with ham, of course, plus mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, pineapple slices, molded salad, yeast rolls and great homemade desserts.
The weather was perfect, sunny and warm, and it also appears to be the start of the annual mud season as the frosty ground is now soft and shoes got a bit muddy on the walk from the car to the VFW hall.
I watched the other day at the ongoing battle between the big gray squirrel and the small red squirrel. The little red guy was busily, and happily, eating his fill of the sunflower seeds when big gray appeared and, with a great leap, drove him running for the safety of the nearest fir tree on my lawn. So, big gray sat there and ate his fill, keeping his eye on the fir tree all the time.
The smaller birds darted in and around the feeders, keeping away from the bigger one where the big gray was eating.
I sure have a large flock of finches, both purple and yellow, and also quite a few tree swallows. They all keep me busy running to add to the supply of seeds that they all devour so quickly, it seems.
I still have about six to eight deer who don’t arrive every day now, but seem to arrive about every two or three days. They keep nibbling on the growth around the trees, and now that my lawn is bare in places, they graze there quite a bit. I still give them them bread and apples, though, and neighbors Jaime Connelly and Stephanie give them treats, also, and really enjoy watching them all.
