Prizes are set for the ninth annual Aroostook River Fun Run on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

Participants will be entered for the chance to win a 10-foot Emotion Guster kayak and paddles, valued at $600. A separate draw gives racers and supporters a chance to win one of two $100 gift certificates from North Maine Woods.

Theresa Fowler, executive director of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce says the event, a joint project between the Rotary Clubs of Washburn and Presque Isle, is all about getting people outside.

“It’s really about promoting a healthy lifestyle and the beauty of the Aroostook area.”

Registration for the eight-mile canoe and kayak race from Washburn to Presque Isle runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Racers will hit the water at 10, beginning at Thomas Brewer Park and finishing downstream at the PI Fish and Game Club.

Walkers, runners or mountain bike riders are also welcome to take part on the trail along the river if conditions allow.

TAMC, a major event sponsor, will provide a barbeque lunch after the race to all registered participants. Handcrafted miniature paddles, sponsored by Huber Engineered Woods LLC, are awarded to top paddlers in each category.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ashland Girl Scouts.

Event coordinator Michael Gudreau says the day isn’t about making money.

“We’re hoping for some good water and a lot of fun.”
