Good will — The Good Will Home Association of Hinckley is almost 27 years old. The anniversary falls on May 20.
Good Home has had a remarkable career, is performing remarkable work. Its ambitions were great from the first, although it had to start on a very small scale. It must be gratifying, however, to its founder, Mr. G.W. Hinckley, to know that is has grown beyond his fondest expectations if not his fondest hopes. There are more than 200 boys and girls at Good Will today and it costs on an average of $200 for the total expense of each one for a year.
75 Years Ago – April 24, 1941
83rd birthday — Mrs. Emily Mobbs, the oldest lady resident of Island Falls, passed her 83rd birthday April 11. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Snow, with whom she lives, entertained in her honor, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mobbs and daughter Joanne.
Boy Scouts — The oldest Boy Scout troop in Aroostook County, Troop 156 of the Court Street Baptist Church received its 23rd charter at a special old timers’ night program Monday night. Many former members of the troop attended the banquet and speaking program.Scout Executive for Aroostook, Perry S.S. Jackson presented the charter to Rev. P. R. Hayden, Church pastor.
50 Years Ago – April 28 , 1966
Grand opening — Gerald Gardner, chairman of the Houlton Town Council, cut the ribbon at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning to officially open the new Sears Catalog order store on North Street. The grand opening of the new store, will continue through the remainder of the week.
New president — The annual business meeting of the Pine Needle Club was held last week at the home of Mrs. Frank Duguay with Mrs. Edward Quinlan as assisting hostess, preceded by a covered dish supper. Elected as the new president was Mrs. Clarence Berry. Mrs. Malcolm Palmer was named vice president.
25 Years Ago – April 24, 1991
150 years — On April 16, the Patten Playground Committee sold over 1,000 postcards featuring photographs of the town courtesy of Donald Campbell Sr. The committee has been raising funds for over a year to create a complete playground for Patten area children. During the day, the Patten office of the U.S. Postal Service offered a special hand cancellation for the sesquicentennial. Patten was incorporated as a town on April 16, 1841.
Top designer — Sarah Putnam of Chadwick Florist received first place in the silk arrangement theme “Celebrate America” at the Houlton Florist Show. The show at the Shiretown Atrium drew over 150 florists and 35 wholesalers.
