HOULTON — Catherine T. Schmiedel, 67, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016 at her residence while surrounded by family. She was born December 30, 1948, in Houlton, the daughter of George Garnett and Doris (Martell) Hogan.

Cathy grew up in Houlton and graduated from Houlton High School in 1966. She then attended and graduated from hairdressing school in Bangor and worked for a time as a hairdresser. She would later return to school at Eastern Maine Medical and become a registered nurse. When Cathy and her husband, Charles moved to California she worked as a bookkeeper for many years. Even though Cathy was a hard worker she did find time to go on shopping trips and go out to lunch with family. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking. Her family was very dear to her and there are many happy memories centered around them. She will be remembered as a loving person with a great sense of humor who brought much joy to others.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Charles Schmiedel Jr. of Houlton; three sons, Wayne Melvin and his girlfriend, Aimee, Kevin Melvin and his long time girlfriend, Antoinette all of California, Charles “Chuck” Schmiedel of Florida, six grandchildren, Kimberly and her husband Wilson, Andre, Alexis, Zachary, Sarah, Katelynn; three great-grandsons, six siblings; Jeannie Flewelling and her husband, Jerry of Monticello, George Garnett and his wife, Harriet of Houlton, Lynn Vail and her husband, Kim of North Carolina, Vicki Hagerman and her husband, Andy of New Limerick, Mark Hogan and his girlfriend, Jenifer of Edinburg, David and Lisa Hogan of Houlton. She also leaves behind four additional siblings, Linda “Sissy” Liolios, Marlene Preeper and her husband, Bobby, Robert Garnett and his wife, Chrissi and Laurie Garnett all of Massachusetts, many nieces and nephews as well as her life long friend, Beverly Kirk. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Paul Martell and her sister, Marie Hare. A celebration of life will take place 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Shiretown Baptist Church, 4 Randall Court, Houlton with Pastor Joshua Brewer officiating.
