East Grand NHS holds induction ceremony

DANFORTH, Maine — The National Honor Society chapter at East Grand High School in Danforth held its annual induction ceremony on April 4, 2016 and installed two new members.

Membership was conferred on Bethany Lindsey, a senior, and Amanda Massey, a sophomore. Both young women received high praise for leadership, service and character from the faculty council members.

Lindsey, daughter of Gary and Suanne Lindsey of Bancroft, was the captain of the girls soccer team this year and is editor of the yearbook. Her service has included tutoring and working with the local food pantry. Last month she received a bronze medal at Skills/USA with Region 2.

Lindsey said she believes that membership in the NHS will open doors for her in the future.

“Being an NHS member gives me recognition for my academic success,” she said. “When colleges or potential employers look at my accomplishments, they will see the NHS membership, which could influence their decision to accept or hire me.”

Massey, daughter of Robert and Lori Massey of Danforth, has been treasurer of her class for two years and is a junior firefighter in Danforth. She too has volunteered with the food pantry and at the annual Christmas event in Danforth. She is both first aid and CPR certified.

For Massey, membership in the NHS is almost a family tradition.

“Watching both of my older siblings become inducted also made me realize how greatly I would like to become a member,” she said. “I’ve worked for years to build up the qualities that are required for NHS, so finally being granted with membership feels like a monumental academic accomplishment.”

Conducting the ceremony were seniors Kim Stoddard (Scholarship) and Andrew Mailman (Character); and juniors Hannah Crone (Service) and Paige Young (Leadership), under the direction of the adviser, Marilyn Burton.

The chapter has two more service projects this spring and plans to hold a Red Cross blood drive in the fall.
