HOULTON, Maine — At the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary’s recent annual meeting Elizabeth Dulin, executive director for the Health Services Foundation, outlined to members Phase II of the current $350,000 campaign in support of Houlton Regional Hospital needs.

The auxiliary voted to support this current fund-raising effort by pledging $10,000 to the cause.

Members heard the description of Phase II regarding 14 pieces of equipment needed to assist the emergency room, operating room, cardiac rehab, obstetrics/labor and delivery, physical and occupational therapy, dietary and ambulatory surgery.

After learning about all the items needed, auxiliary members voted to have their gift used for the purchase of the requested “Ortho Helmets” for the operating room.

“Orthopedic Helmets are worn during total knee, hip replacement, and fractured hip repair,” explained Denise Hannigan, BSN, RN, CNOR surgical services manager. “The helmets help maintain sterility during surgery and need to be replaced to maintain Houlton Regional’s high standards of surgical care. Dr. Husted and the operating room team will be extremely pleased to obtain the new helmets as they will also be quieter and lighter to wear as well.”

“The auxiliary is a consistent and significant supporter of Foundation efforts, as to date $108,000 has been granted to help Foundation fund-raising projects for the hospital,” Dulin said. “For a small gift shop here in Houlton, run by a dedicated group of volunteers we can only extend our deepest gratitude for their support. This organization has played a big part with their generosity in the overall success of our fundraising efforts. We rely solely on donor support in order to stay true to the Foundation’s mission of ‘Supporting Excellence in Health Care,’ and when it comes to the auxiliary generosity defines that organization,” said Dulin.

The hospital Gift Shop, located in the lobby at Houlton Regional, is the prime source of income for the auxiliary.

“This wonderful little shop presents all kinds of varied items that may be purchased by hospital employees and those visiting the facility,” Dulin said. “Other fundraisers such as the May Fudge Sale and the Christmas Tree of Love help to add to the auxiliary’s income. They do make a big difference for all we do, and they never tire of assisting us help our hospital. They shake the world in the most gentle way because every time they give to support the challenges we face in health care fundraising, a life may be saved, someone’s health may be made better and what greater gift can any one of us hope to receive. This small group of dedicated individuals has a very big presence in our little corner of the world,” Dulin said.
