100 Years Ago – May 3, 1916
New position — Miss Geneva Astle, who has been attending Houlton Business College, has accepted a position as bookkeeper and stenographer for L.L. McLeod.
Newly appointed — Mrs. Seth S. Thornton has been appointed by the president of the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs as one of the judges in the prize contest of stories which has been conducted by the Lewiston Journal. The prize-winning stories will be published in book form, making Volume II of “Maine In History and Romance.”
75 Years Ago – May 1, 1941
Apron sale — Methodist women of Mars Hill had an apron sale and tea. Mrs. Doris Hoar and Mrs. Erene Walls were co-chairmen at the annual apron sale and tea held at the Methodist church vestry Tuesday afternoon by members of the Susanna Wesley Club.
Contest — Ricker Classical Institute is sending four speakers to the University of Maine Speaking Contest. The speakers are: Milton Adleman of Mars Hill, oration; Priscilla Mattoon of Presque Isle, extemporaneous; Marcella Stitham of Littleton, humorous; and Freda Moran of New Limerick, serious.
50 Years Ago – May 5, 1966
New bikes — Harold Valley and two of his children, Patty, 7, and Jeffrey, 9, showed off the bicycles that will be given away by the Chester L. Briggs Post American Legion during the annual Fourth of July celebration.
Scholarship — On behalf of the Aroostook County Medical Society, Dr. Clyde I. Swett, treasurer of the society, presented a check for $300 to Dr. Robert E. Lovett, vice president for development at Ricker College. This sum will be matched by the college for a scholarship award in 1966 to a Ricker pre-medical student in Aroostook County above the freshman level.
25 Years Ago – May 1, 1991
Special visit — Making a special visit with deaf students at Houlton Elementary School was Ralph Sadano, sign language coordinator of Governor Baxter School for the Deaf. Students received instruction on sign language and deaf culture.
Celebration — The Immigration and Naturalization Service is celebrating its centennial in 1991. The Houlton Town Council proclaimed May 6-12 as Immigration and Naturalization Service Centennial Week. The INS was created in 1891 by President Benjamin Harrison.
