On April 23, 2016, Charlene Webb and son, Dale, were in Garland where they attended the 84th birthday of Charlene’s sister, Freela Lancaster, who had told Charlene that the only thing she would like to have was an upside-down pineapple cake.
So Charlene made two and took them both down to Garland, where everyone there at the party really enjoyed them both, along with the homemade ice cream. After spending the afternoon reminiscing over the old day, Charlene and Dale left for the long ride back home.
I was told lately that Ardith (Donahue) Jones, a former resident of Island Falls now living in Boothbay, has visited at the home of her brother, John, and his daughter, Susie, while John has been away.
I would like to wish ‘Happy spring’ to a couple of friends, Joyce and Diane Curry, who are former residents of Island Falls, now living in Portland, and who subscribe to the Pioneer Times to get all the news from the area. I imagine they are already planning on their annual trek back home to spend a few weeks this summer.
I had a real good look at the male cardinal the other day as I was watching from the kitchen window, and he flew right up and sat on the top of one of the feeders next to the house. If I had only had a camera I would have had a great shot of him, as he sat there for quite a few minutes. Then down he went to another feeder and ate there quite awhile. The female showed up shortly after but appears to be more timid and doesn’t linger very long.
I still have oodles of both male and female finch, a few swallows and also a nuthatch or two. The pesky gray and red squirrels are still around, so I am forever shooing them off so that the little birds can eat, and they both now can get into one feeder, though I think it is easier for the little red one and he stays in that feeder till all is gone.
I had nine deer in my backyard recently and they all stayed a long time — about two hours — looking for food. The weather has been so dry not much is getting green, so it is hard for them to find anything edible.
I have a few jonquils in bloom and am hoping for more to come — maybe when it finally rains.
