AAI to host Community Service Challenge on May 21
On May 21, Aroostook Aspirations Initiative will host the County Service Challenge, an effort which connects students, local businesses and community members with service projects in need of volunteers.
Service projects will be completed all over Aroostook County and participants are invited to enjoy a lunch, all free of charge. Several organizations, such as The Rotary Club of Mars Hill, Fort Kent Lions Club, and the Presque Isle Fire Department will be sponsoring meals for County Service Challenge participants.
The event is designed to engage County youth in service projects and help youth learn the importance of community service, encouraging them to become more engaged in their communities. Student groups, community groups, families and neighbors of all ages are invited to participate.
“Community service is what ties a community together,” said Drew Lajoie of Caribou, a 2015 Gauvin Scholar. “Community service in The County deepens our roots and creates bonds that make it near impossible to leave.”
Brittany Harris, 2015 Gauvin Scholar from Ashland, agreed. “I participate and take pride in community service because I know that I am helping individuals and the community. I love seeing the changes in the community and making others happy, just because I took time to help.”
According to Kristen Wells, Executive Director of Aroostook Aspirations Initiative, “Engaging our young people in community is so important to our sustainability, our quality of life, and our commitment to building a future for our students in Aroostook County. The benefits of the County Service Challenge will extend beyond the day and the impact of the projects. Community service reduces crime, breaks down barriers of poverty, encourages health, builds productive relationships and strengthens bonds between neighbors.”
Wells added, “While the focus of the event is to engage students, the County Service Challenge is a great event for all ages. We encourage all business leaders, parents and students to participate in the County Service Challenge on May 21. This event allows all sectors of our community to work side by side and get to know each other, while helping the County.”
There is no cost to participate but donations are encouraged. Funds raised support Aroostook Aspirations Initiative’s work with Aroostook County’s high school graduates attending college in The County.
Recognition for participation will be awarded based on project impact, percentage of participants per community and student participation.
