On May 2, 2016, John Stevens, Barbara Pelletier and Marion Hoar were volunteers at the Upper Room in Sherman.
Business was slow at first, but as the day wore on it picked up a bit and many packages of clothes were taken home and also sheets, pillowcases and utensils for kitchens. The weather cooperated and the day was lovely and warm.
I had a nice telephone call from a lady in Monticello wanting to know about a certain bird. Although I am not an authority on our feathered friends, I did know what type of bird she described to me. We had a nice chat and she also has bird feeders outside her kitchen window, which give her a good view of all the goings-on around the feeders.
I still have the pesky gray and red squirrels, around but I don’t fill the feeders much anymore as the squirrels take over and eat every seed in sight, leaving practically nothing for the nuthatches, swallows and finches.
I have been busy planting my cherry tomato and pepper plants and making sure they are watered well after. The blackflies are really thick now so I don’t stay out long, and when I go out to mow I make sure that I have enough fly dope on to ward off the blackfly attack.
Looking forward to seeing many friends who will be visiting in the area come Memorial Day. Among them will be Joyce and Diane Curry, former residents, who spend most of the summer here in Island Falls staying at the Curry homestead and also enjoying the Summerfest held here in town every summer.
I haven’t seen any deer lately, but I keep an eye on the back lawn near the woods and hope to see them out there soon, maybe with a new fawn or two.
