Houlton (7-6 overall) qualified for the postseason, earning the No. 6 seed and a home playoff match. Coach Maunder said it was “wonderful” that her squad was able to gain home court for at least one match.
“We had a really good week of practice, and Friday before Memorial Day weekend, we had a really fun, two-and-a-half hour practice,” she said. “I think it might have because I bought them all sundaes.
Houlton defeated No. 11 Calais 4-1 Tuesday in a preliminary playoff match in Houlton. It marks the second straight year that Houlton has faced the Blue Devils in a prelim, with the Shires victorious both times.
The Shires moved on to face No. 3 Penobscot Valley of Howland (9-3) Tuesday in a quarterfinal match. Houlton lost that match 4-1.
In its preliminary match, the individual results, with Houlton players listed first, were: in singles, Becca Mooers lost to Haley Donovan, 0-6, 3-6; Piper Flewelling beat Elizabeth Harjo, 6-0, 6-0; and June Choi defeated Cassidy Johnson, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Lauren Hogan and Morgan Nelson beat Marisa Mitchell and Della Harris, 6-2, 6-1; and Tessa McCormick and Emily Miller bested Julia Edgerly and Elisa Soehlmann, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Results from the quarterfinal match were, in singles, Mooers lost to Amy Hallett, 0-6, 1-6; Flewelling lost to Sami Ireland, 0-6, 3-6; and Choi lost to Abby Davis, 0-6, 0-6. In doubles, Hogan and Nelson defeated Mikayla Roy and Makenzie Plourde, 6-0, 6-1; and McCormick and Miller lost to Maddison Jenkins and Judy King, 0-6, 1-6.
