Baseball playoffs in full swing

The regular season has come to a close, but four of the five local squads are not yet ready to hang up their bats and cleats.

The Houlton baseball team finished undefeated in Class C North with a 16-0 record, but are the No. 2 seed for the impending playoffs. The Shires will get a first-round bye and play the winner of No. 7 Washington Academy-No. 10 Penquis on Thursday. The time of that game was not set by presstime.

Houlton did not face either Washington Academy or Penquis during the regular season.

Hodgdon baseball (13-2) finished second in Class D North. The Hawks will host the winner of Tuesday’s No. 7 Ashland or No. 10 Katahdin prelim game on Thursday, June 9. The time of that game was not decided by presstime.

During the regular season, the Hawks beat Katahdin 18-8 and 15-1, and defeated Ashland 11-1 at home, but fell 18-8 in Ashland.

Southern Aroostook baseball (7-7) finished eighth in Class D North and will play No. 9 Stearns Tuesday, June 7, at 3:30 p.m. The two squads did not meet during the regular season.

Katahdin baseball (4-10) finished 10th in Class D North and play at No. 7 Ashland Tuesday, June 7 at 3:30 p.m. in a prelim game. The two squads did not meet during the regular season.

East Grand/GHCA (2-12) finished 15th in Class D North and did not make the playoffs this year.

The following is a recap of final season games that were reported to the newspaper.

Lee Academy 0, Houlton 7 — On June 1, Houlton finished its regular season by shutting out Lee Academy. Ryan Dee pitched a two-hitter, while striking out 15. Nick Perfitt led the offense with two hits and two runs scored.

For the Pandas, Nathan Gilman gave up three hits and struck out eight.

PVHS 10, Katahdin 3 — At Stacyville May 31, Grant Doane singled, tripled and drove in a pair of runs to propel Penobscot Valley to the win. Jarrett Priest added a single, a double and two RBI’s while Benny Woodward singled twice for the 14-1 Howlers.

For Katahdin, Rig Otero had two singles and scored a run, while Tyson Porter doubled and drove in a run.
