SHERMAN — Donald M. Heath Sr., 76, passed away on May 30, 2016 in the comforts of his home and surrounded by family. He was born April 17, 1940 in Sherman, the son of Ruby K. and Colby J. Heath.

Donald was known as “Big Don” Heath to most and lived up to the name in size, strength, and heart. Don farmed his entire life, continuing the traditions of generations before him on the Heath Family Homestead raising potatoes and managing a dairy farm. Some of his greatest joys were watching a new born calf come into the world or a potato push through the ground, blossom, and grow. He served his community as Selectman, planned many community dinners, and offered help in any way he could.

Farming and community were always important to Don, but most important was his family and his beloved wife of 56 years, Doris (Blakely) Heath. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by a son, Robert A. Heath and his wife, Rosalie of Sherman; a daughter, Lisa Heath Cole of Sherman; eight grandsons; two granddaughters; several great grandchildren; a sister, Laura June and her husband Larry Largay of Brewer; an uncle, Leo King and his wife, Helen of Sherman; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be remembered by many special friends, including life-long friend Paul Gardiner and his wife Sue of Whittier, CA. He is predeceased by his parents; two sons, John C. Heath and Donald M. Heath Jr. and a brother, Richard Heath.

The family of Donald M. Heath gratefully thanks the staff of Lincoln Lakes Region Dialysis and the Visiting Nurses of Aroostook.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at the Sherman Cemetery with the Rev. Donnis Willigar Jr. officiating. A celebration of life was held immediately after at the Washburn Memorial church in Sherman. For an online memory book and to leave condolences please visit www.bowersfuneral.com.
