HOULTON, Maine — Blasting caps discovered on property in a residential neighborhood were detonated last Tuesday afternoon by the Maine State Police.
Houlton police Officer Matt Quint said the caps were found by a homeowner on Grant Street early May 31.
Quint said he could not name the homeowner but said the man found them on the ground when he was doing yard work.
He said the man believed the blasting caps came from a home that burned down in the 1980s.
Quint said the area was cordoned off once the blasting caps were discovered, and the Houlton fire chief and the Maine State Police explosive ordinance team were called to detonate them.
No one was injured.
Blasting caps contain a small explosive charge and are used to detonate a larger explosive, such as dynamite, according to the National Park Service. They are considered dangerous, “as they could potentially detonate and injure and/or kill someone handling them.”
