100 Years Ago – June 28, 1916
A smile in their voices — The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., is holding a Voice with a Smile contest in Portland for no other purpose other than to encourage courtesy in the use of the telephone. The operatives in a telephone exchange, especially in a very busy day get very tired and it is human nature to become rather peevish as one gets tired and as one’s nerves almost cry aloud in their fatigue. But the telephone girls have schooled themselves not to show their exhaustion in their voices and almost every voice that comes over the wire with its brief message of “Number please,” contains a smile.
75 Years Ago – June 26, 1941
Two flights — Aroostook County will be served by two flights daily by Northeast Airlines planes effective July 1. An additional Lockheed passenger plane will provide passenger, mail and express service here. Passengers out of Houlton are advised to make reservations at an early date as traffic is beginning to become heavy.
New president — Mrs. Ralph W. Emerson of Island Falls was elected president of the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs at the closing sessions of the 49th annual convention at Northeast Harbor Thursday. Mrs. Emerson is well prepared and qualified to assume the office of president of the more than 11,000 clubwomen during the next two years.
50 Years Ago – June 29, 1966
Rotary president — Robert Maxell received the gavel and congratulations from Robert Anderson upon his installation Monday night as president of the Houlton Rotary Club. Mr. Maxell succeeds Mr. Anderson as club president. The installation took place during a Ladies Night program at Ricker Commons.
50th Anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Miles O. Smith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family gathering for dinner Monday noon at Al’s Restaurant. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were entertained by slides reproduced from old snapshots of them during their courtship day, wedding and various occasions of their life. The Smiths were married at East Hodgdon on June 21, 1916.
25 Years Ago – June 26, 1991
Art program — Eight artists are on display with 40 exhibits in three lobby locations at Houlton Regional Hospital.Theresa Wood, auxiliary president, and Sharon Clark, art program chairman, were on hand by the exhibits.
Land purchase — The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians recently purchased the 192-acre Lowery farm in Littleton. Attending the signing of the papers were: Doug Lowery, landowner; Bitt Ott, Eastern area director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs; Clair Sabittis, tribal chairman of the Band of Maliseets and Edward Brown, assistant secretary Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior.
