Mountain adds coffee to portfolio

HOULTON, Maine — Teaching young drivers the rules of the road requires a great deal of time and patience. And in some cases, it takes a lot of coffee.

Buddy Mountain has operated Mountain’s Driving school for nearly 17 years from his home in Houlton. Recently, he added a new business to his repertoire as he has become a licensed distributor for Organo Gold coffee.

Mountain got started with the coffee business through his daughter Kim, who lives in Glenburn. She had been a distributor of the coffee several months and encouraged her father to become a licensed distributor.

“Usually I am very picky about my coffee,” Mountain said. “I tried this coffee and it tasted really good.”

Organo was launched in 2008 in Richmond, British Columbia. The company currently operates in over 44 countries on six continents. The coffee is created with ganoderma — an edible mushroom, that the company claims has certain health benefits. It also claims to come with a timed-release caffeine system, so that consumers will not get the jitters if they drink it quickly.

For his birthday, Mountain’s daughter got him a “distributor” pack and Mountain told his daughter he was not interested in being a salesman, going door-to-door selling the coffee, to which his daughter replied, “You don’t have to, coffee sells itself.”

So far, that thinking has proven spot on as Mountain has only had to pass out samples of the product and sales have already started to come in. Currently, he is the only distributor north of Millinocket.
