Last Tuesday, June 28, Houlton Ultimate Summer League underwent Week 2. The games this past week were Purple Team vs. Blue Team, followed by Red Team vs, Yellow Team.
In the first game, both teams suffered losses in Week 1s games and were ready to battle for a win. Our league plays 5-on-5, but Blue Team was missing many of its members this week and only had 4 players, therefore Game 1 had to play 4-on-4.
Blue got off with the first quick point, but Purple was ready to battle back and answered back with 3 back to back goals. That would happen again, when Blue scored its second point, and Purple coming back with 3 more goals to make it 6-2 at the half. Blue Team, captained by Bradley Burlock, found to be quite depleted at half only having 4 players for the evening and no subs.
After their break, with some newfound strength, they were ready to go for the second half. Purple scored first, with Blue answering back with their team’s third goal for the game. However, Purple, having a substitute available, was able to overpower and come up with two quick goals, making it 9-3. At that point, a soft cap was called, in lieu of time running up and drawing close to 7 when Game 2 would commence. Since current top goal was 9, first to 11 would win.
Blue and Purple went back and forth with goals, making it 10-5, when a final hard cap was called. Hard cap means one more point will be played out to determine the winner. As it was known who was going to be the winner, Blue battled to win one more goal, but that ended the game with final score of 10-6.
Right after, Red Team was ready to go up against Yellow Team. Yellow Team was missing its captain Justin Fereshetian and wife, but teams decided they wanted to play it out regardless. Red came out with the first two goals to start the game. It was back and forth after that with the next four goals.
With Red in the lead by 2 points, Yellow came up with some great offensive plays and found a connection on the field, making 4 great back to back goals to end the first half, 6-4 with the lead. After the break, Yellow continued their streak making two more goals, but Red found their strength to make a huge comeback scoring 4 back to back goals as well. They tied the game, 8-8, making for a very exciting end for their game. Points went back and forth, first with Yellow scoring, then Red, tying it again at 9-9. Yellow, however, showed its offensive strength in the way they work well together on the field, and came up with the final two goals to end the game 11-9.
It was another great week for games. Games are held at the Maliseets old fields on Bell Road. Anyone of the community is welcome to come out and watch the fun, held every week at 6, and 7. Next weeks games will be held Tuesday, after the holiday, with Yellow going up against Blue, and Purple up against Red.
