HOULTON, Maine — Progress continues to be made on Riverfront Park, as new playground equipment was recently installed in the area.
Nancy Ketch, grant writer and community development director, said last week that the equipment was installed approximately two weeks ago.
The playground includes two pieces, a set of swings and teeter-totters. Upgrades to the park also include the purchase of new artwork to replace the sculpture of a bear that was on loan to the town and was eventually sold.
The grant writer said that the Riverfront Committee recently purchased art from Whitaker Studio, which features sculptures that are all produced by hand.
According to their website, the artist, Lyman Whitaker, produces the sculptures from fabricated copper, steel and stainless steel and each sculpture is secured against theft and rests on a sealed ball bearing at the top of a vertical rod.
Ketch said that the sculpture should be here by the end of the month.
“Eventually, they would like to have as many as three sculptures there,” said Ketch. “We are making some great progress in the park. It is nice to see that park kind of come alive now.”
Jessica Parks of Houlton said that she loves to take her three children down to the park at night to enjoy the new playground equipment.
“They love to swing. And it is nice to just sit on one of the picnic tables by the river if it is a nice night and watch them.”
