DANFORTH, Maine — The 2016 sailing season is in full swing at East Grand Lake, just 25 miles south of Houlton on U.S. Route 1.
For those who dream of learning how to sail, or those looking to be more active, the sailing club is a perfect setting.
A group of small-boat sailing enthusiasts from the Peter’s Cove Yacht Club gather to race on select Saturdays in July and August 2016. Classes of sailboats typically include laser, lightning, a gaff-rigged schooner, a Columbia 24, O’Day Daysailers and Hobie Cats.
Individuals do not need to own a sailboat to get acquainted with the sport. People are welcome to come as observers by calling in advance of the races.
Sailors enjoy the beautiful international lake located on the Canadian/American border between Orient and Fosterville, N.B. Winds are variable, but mostly light. Racing starts at 1 p.m. and finishes typically within two hours. Potluck suppers follow where “sailing chatter” is lively.
