Editor’s Note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Memorial Library in Houlton highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by the staff.

“If you ever stopped to taste a blueberry, you would know that it’s not really about the blue at all.”

So goes the entry for July 28 in Julie Fogliano’s new book, “When Green Becomes Tomatoes – Poems for All Seasons”. (j811 Fog) Gentle soft pastel pictures by Julie Morstad add so much character to this book of free verse. Starting in spring (why not?) the poems go through a child’s thoughts and experiences throughout a year.

March 20: “from a snow covered tree one bird singing… balancing gently on the tip of spring.”

August 30: “if you could take a bite out of the middle of this morning it would be sweet and dripping like peaches…”

With acute appreciation for the marvels of nature, this book uses words in surprising and fun ways to express thoughts. October’s entries are especially catchy – pictures and rhymes so cute.

Then there’s that white duck in November! By March 13: “I asked the winter to please tell the snow thank you very much, but no Just in case you special readers don’t care for this book, of course Cary has many others. Cary Library is especially busy now with the Summer Reading Program for children and teens in full swing; the staff will gladly help you find something to please you.
