HOULTON, Maine — A group of 48 youths, ranging in age from 8-18 gathered at the Houlton Band of Maliseet’s Athletic Field last week for three evenings of football fun July 25-27 as part of the Houlton Football Association’s inaugural Summer Clinic.
Participants were instructed by coaches Brian Reynolds, Jon Solomon, Vernon Upton, Andy Hay, Bill Alderson, Francis Fredericks and Eddie Flint.
“The clinic is an opportunity for players who are new to the sport to learn the fundamentals and explore their interest in joining a team,” Reynolds said. “For returning players it is a chance to get back on the field, develop new skills, practice and reunite with teammates.”
The players of all ages began by doing warm ups led by the high school team members. They then divided into groups to participate in drills. Next they separated into their perspective teams to work on varying skills. Finally, they participated in a large group relay to end each night’s session.
Throughout the event, older players mentored the younger players fostering the Houlton football family. The Association promotes community, physical activity, character building, discipline and teamwork.
Registrations are being accepted for the regular season. For more information on the Houlton Football Association please contact them via their Facebook page.
