NEW LIMERICK — Donald Nelson Scott 82, passed away peacefully Monday, July 25, 2016 at Maine Medical Center. He was born June 5, 1934 at his family home in East Hodgdon, the only child of William H. and Lillian E. (Hunter) Scott.
Don grew up in Houlton and attended Houlton schools, graduating in 1952 from Houlton High School and for a time attended Ricker College. He grew up being very active in the Military Street Baptist Church, having served on all church boards including five terms as chairman of Board of Deacons and Mission Board Chairman. His heart was always in Missions. Don was also much involved in American Baptist Churches including State president of Maine and eight years on the National General Board as District Director for six New England states. He felt privileged to be one of thirteen men on the board and one of eight on the National Executive Board meeting across the country as needed in various states. Other boards he had served on were Salvation Army Advisory Board, Baptist Park Executive Board, General Board, Executive Board, China Lake Board and Houlton Humane Shelter. Don loved meeting people and as a result had many friends. He and his wife Vera taught Sunday School classes and were leaders for BYF groups for a lot of years having had many trips such as camping and visiting in ABC Colleges. Don led a scout troop for ten years sponsored by Military Street Baptist Church and loved it.
Don is survived by his wife of 53 years Vera (Johnston) Scott of New Limerick; his son William “Bill” N. Scott and his wife Laura of Carmel; two grandchildren Meagan Elizabeth Scott of Bangor and Justin Nelson Scott of Carmel. The middle name of Nelson is taken from Admiral Horatio Nelson and one boy in every family in every generation had Nelson as a middle name.
Friends called 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Military Street Baptist Church until the time of the service 2 p.m. with Rev. Randall Burns officiating.
