Mr. and Mrs. David Beran and son, David, have arrived from their home in Floyd, Va., to spend some time at their home here in Island Falls. Kathey Beran is the daughter of Bob and “Ginny” Mooers, who were former residents of Island Falls for many years before selling their home and moving to Virginia. The Berans are now the proud owners of a home here on River Street and enjoy being here for their summer vacation.
Danny, Beth and Kelly Joy from Blandon, Penn., are spending some time at the Dunphy cottage at Mattawamkeag Lake and visiting all his relatives in the area. Danny is a former resident of Island Falls and always looks forward to seeing everyone, especially the friends he grew up with.
On July 28, 2016 four ladies, former employees of Dr. Blum, met for lunch at the River Cafe and to have fun remembering about the “good old days.” Those employees were Paula Jacobs, nurse; Amber McGary, laboratory technician; and Riva Hawkes, x-ray technician; along with Gail Campbell, clinic director, who did a great job of running the clinic so smoothly and making sure we all did our jobs. It was great fun to get together, and all plan to meet again in September, as there are still a great many stories yet to be remembered and told.
The Whittier Congregational Church held their annual trash and treasure sale on July 30 and the tables were soon surrounded by the ones looking for just the right things. The food table was soon bare and some lucky people who got there early were lucky to get the homemade raspberry and blueberry pies. Tickets were sold on a picnic basket (full of stuff for a picnic except fresh food), and the lucky name will be drawn on Aug. 7.
I still have many birds at my new feeder and I watched the other day when the big gray squirrel tried desperately to get some of the seeds. He would dash out on the tree limb then turn around and dash back to try another approach. He finally gave up, and the last I saw of him he was heading for the tree a short distance away, and there I think he waits to see if i will put some seeds into a feeder he can get to.
I saw the groundhog a couple of days ago but no signs, so far, of any holes. I still keep an eye out to spy any deer that may come out of the woods to graze. It has been quite dry here and the grass isn’t as green as it was, so maybe they are sticking to the streams and rivers.
My small veggie garden is doing well and soon I will have lots of cherry tomatoes for my salad and to give to any friends for their salads.
