East Grand Highlands unveil hiking trail

DANFORTH — The main “Overlook Trail” is now open to the public for your enjoyment, thanks to the hard work of volunteers with the East Grand Highlands comittee. Members of the group have already heard some very positive reports from those that have taken the hike.

There are a few rules; Please stay on the marked overlook trail. The trail is for hiking only, so no wheeled or motorized vehicles allowed, and please practice “carry in, carry out.” Hikers are asked to leave no trace behind of their visit.

As summer proceeds into its later stages the hiking trail committee is planning for its late summer and fall projects. They will hold a hiking trail committee meeting on Monday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m. at First Settlers Lodge. All committee members should be present and additional members willing to share ideas and the “behind the scenes” work load are always welcome.

The group will hold its first late summer work party on Saturday, Sept. 10 starting at 8 a.m. with hopes to get back to work to complete a second trail before the end of the season. Chain saws, steel rakes, shovels and loping shears are all good tools to bring along. There is always a bit of tractor work so if someone can bring one that would be great. They will plan to work as long as there are volunteers to help.

On Saturday, Sept. 17 the committee will celebrate the grand opening of the Overlook Trail in conjunction with “Maine Great Outdoor Weekend.” A community hike to the overlook departs from the trailhead at 11 a.m. and the group will hike 1.6 miles to the overlook, stopping along the way to see a few interesting natural features of the area. Once at the overlook, the party will have a hot dog picnic lunch, enjoy the scenic view, share ideas for further trailwork and see how additional volunteers can play an active role in the progression of the project.

Please plan to participate in this community hiking trail project and also take time to share in the rewards of the work already completed by dedicated volunteers.
