100 Years Ago – Aug. 16, 1916

 Updated look — Painters during the past week have done some very attractive and striking sign work on the store houses of the Putnam Hardware Co.

 Trip — Supt. L.W. Robbins is enjoying a trip to New Jersey and other places where he is inspecting a number of model school buildings.

 

75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1941

 Quilt completed — Mrs. Delilah Gatchell, 75, is both speedy and deft with a needle despite the number of her years. Late last week Mrs. Gatchell completed a quilt composed of 2,250 pieces, an undertaking which she began six weeks ago. The pieces were entirely sewed by hand and the finished product, according to those who have seen it, is a masterpiece of the quilter’s art.

 Win! — Four Houlton girls, the Misses Joyce Robinson, Jane French, Jackie Rideout and Joan Lawlis, were members of a riding group from Camp Paysock who won first prize in the horse show held Saturday at the West Bath Summer home of former Mayor and Mrs. Arthur J. Dutton.

 

50 Years Ago – Aug. 17, 1966

 Tale of Chicago — Miss Jean Howard, a 1966 graduate of Ricker Classical Institute and a National Merit Scholarship finalist, told the Rotary Club Monday of her recent week in Chicago as a representative of the state to a convention of teenagers.

 Big move — Sergeant Major Percy E. Gagnon, Headquarters Battery, 152d Artillery, Maine Army National Guard, briefed the battalion first sergeants on the training program for the unit’s second week of annual field training at Camp Drum, New York.

 

25 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1991

 60 years — “Grow old along with me – the best is yet to be,” was the theme for the celebration of the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lilley of Houlton. They were married in Littleton on July 29, 1931. The bride’s matron of honor, her sister Ava Mitchell, was a special guest at the event, held at Linneus Sno Sports Club. A photo album depicting the lives and gatherings of the Lilley family was presented to the couple by their children, with a Polaroid camera given by their 17 grandchildren to capture future Lilley gatherings.

 Bankroll winner — Thomas Goff of Smyrna Mills received a check for $1,000 as a winner of Bankroll at Andy’s IGA. The check was presented by manager Bruce Williams.
