Legislator explores laminated strand market, electricity costs

NEW LIMERICK, Maine — U.S. Sen. Angus King of Maine toured Louisiana-Pacific Corp.’s Houlton mill in New Limerick recently, getting a first-hand look at the laminated strand lumber (LSL) mill and learning about the mill’s business model.

This was the first time Sen. King toured LP’s Houlton mill.

Mill staffers spoke with Sen. King about the mill’s workforce, issues dealing with electricity distribution costs in Maine, as well as the market for the mill’s products, and the various uses for the LSL produced there.

Sen. King talked about the Timber Innovation Act of 2016, of which he is a co-sponsor, as well as issues facing the forest products industry in Maine.

LSL, a structural engineered wood product based on wood-strand technology, is used in a wide variety of residential construction applications including headers and beams, wall studs, roof beams and rafters, truss chords, rim boards and stair stringers.
