With harvest time quickly approaching. motorists can expect to see an increase in farm machinery on the roadway.
The Houlton Police Department would like to remind motorists that:
Farm machinery has the legal right to use the public road just as other vehicles.
The operator of farm machinery may not be able to see you. Remember, if you cannot see the driver the driver cannot see you.
Farm machinery may take up more than one lane.
Farm machinery that is half on the road and half on the shoulder may suddenly move completely onto the road to avoid hitting obstacles such as signs and mailboxes.
Before passing farm machinery motorist should:
Be certain that the farm machinery is not turning left.
Determine if the road is wide enough for you to safely pass.
Make certain there is adequate distance for you to safely pass.
Remember to always drive safe, to be safe.
