DANFORTH, Maine — The 17-member Peter’s Cove Yacht Club of East Grand Lake, established in 2008, completed its 2016 three race regatta summer series on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016.
Race Director Paul LaPointe made the decision to postpone the race, usually scheduled for Saturdays, to Sunday because of the forecast called for more favorable wind conditions.
That decision let Mother Nature deliver a strong wind allowing winning Hobie catamaran Skipper Bob Foster of Fosterville, New Brunswick to complete the entire course in just 35 minutes.
Unfortunately, that same heavy breeze tossed competing Skipper Jim Hillman, who was reaching momentarily to retrieve his hat, into a rather spectacular capsize which required a prolonged, but successful recovery effort by PCYC’s assigned safety boats.
The lively wind conditions awarded local lake spectators with quite a day of sailing action.
An international sailboat handicapping formula, called The Portsmouth Yardstick, is used for our local PCYC scoring. Final season champions qualify by calculating a skipper’s two best finishes of the three race summer series.
PCYC 2016 Qualifying Champions were acknowledged in three sailboat classes:
– Catamaran (multihull) — 1, Bob Foster; 2, Barry Parker.
– Centerboard — 1, Paul LaPointe; 2, Joe Fagnant, 3, Dave Wilson.
– Keelboat — 1, Ted Sussman.
