Shires, Hawks remain perfect

 The Houlton and Hodgdon boys soccer teams have played perfectly on the soccer field this fall, with both squads sporting undefeated records in the early goings of the season.

Houlton (3-0) is currently fourth in Class C North, despite the fact that the Shires have yet to give up a goal this season. Houlton has outscored foes 12-0 through the first three games. The Shires face their toughest test of the season noon Saturday at home against unbeaten Orono.

Hodgdon (4-0) is sixth in Class D North, and has also enjoyed a scoring-fest this fall. The Hawks have outscored opponents 16-4 and have not allowed more than one goal per game.

Also in Class D, Southern Aroostook (2-2) is ninth; East Grand (2-1) is 14th and Katahdin (0-4) is 19th.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Hodgdon 6, Katahdin 1 — At Stacyville Monday, the visiting Hawks received a hat trick from Dylan Oliver, while Daden Palmer added a goal and two assists. Wyatt Foster and Jordyn Merritt each had one goal, and Michael Sanders and Josh Palmer had one assist.

For Katahdin, Rigoberto Otero scored a goal off an assist from Jeremiah Rodgerson.

Josh Foster had seven saves on 13 shots for the Hawks, while Tanner Lane stopped nine of 23 shots for the Cougars.

Houlton 9, Calais 0 — At Houlton Friday, in the home opener for the Shires, Houlton scored early and often en route to the lopsided shutout.

Nick Perfitt had two goals and two assists, while Zach Fitzpatrick added two goals and Pat Howe, Jacob Worthley, Abe Lorom, Keegan Gentle and Jaron Gentle all had solo goals for the Shires, while Lorom, Jacob Worthley, Howe, Ben Grant, and Nolan Porter all added assists.

Limestone-MSSM 1, Hodgdon 2 — At Hodgdon Friday, Palmer scored a goal with 1:36 left in the game to lift Hodgdon to the victory. Foster had the first goal for Hodgdon after both teams played to a 0-0 tie in the first half.

Travis Hatfield scored for the Eagles midway through the second half to tie the game at 1-1.

Matthew Pelkey made 16 saves on 22 shots for Limestone and Foster finished with 10 saves on 15 shots for Hodgdon.

East Grand 2, Highview Christian 0 — At Charleston Thursday, Phillip Farley scored two first half goals including a penalty kick 11 minutes into the game to lead East Grand to the 2-0 victory over Highview.

Thomas Holman and Tyler Frye combined to save 9 shots for the Vikings. TJ Sheldon saved 9 of the 11 shots he faced for the 0-1 Knights.

Katahdin 0, Lee 3 — At Stacyville Thursday, Hoang Chu had two goals while Mike Noyes had one in the win for Lee Academy. Matty Knowles and Song Thai combined on two saves on six shots for 1-1 Lee.

Tanner Lane saved six of 13 shots for Katahdin

Ashland 6, Southern Aroostook 1 — At Dyer Brook Sept. 7, the visiting Ashland Hornets scored early and often to beat the Warriors. Kyle Beaulier scored two goals, while Tristan Pelletier, Michael White and Lucas Craig added solo goals for the Hornets.

Steven Bellanceau had two saves on six shots for Ashland, while Nolan Altvater saved six of 14 shots for Southern Aroostook.

Houlton 2, Mattanawcook Academy 0 — At Lincoln Sept. 6, the Shires secured the shutout victory thanks to a strong defensive effort and two goals courtesy of Pat Howe. Howe scored four minutes into the game off of an assist from Keegan Gentle.

The score remained 1-0 until Howe slid another shot past the Lincoln keeper with 3:40 remaining in the second half.

AJ Henderson had four saves on five shots for Houlton, while Corbett Arnold had 11 saves against a 18 shots for MA.

Hodgdon 3, East Grand 1 — At Danforth, Sept. 6, Hodgdon’s Foster, Oliver and Michael Sanders each scored a goal to lift the Hawks to victory over East Grand.

Wyatt Oliver netted the lone goal for the Vikings.

Hodgdon moves to 2-0 while East Grand is now 1-1.
