HOULTON, Maine — The deadline to file paperwork to appear as a candidate for town offices on the November ballot is fast approaching.

Interested individuals have until 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 to return nomination papers. To be completed, nomination papers must have 75 signatures from registered voters in Houlton. Forms are available at the town office, 21 Water St., during normal business hours (Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Up for grabs are two seats (three-year terms) on the town council; two seats (three-year terms) for the RSU 29 school board; three seats (three-year terms) for the board of budget review; two three-year terms on the Houlton Water Company board; and one five-year term on the Cary Library Board of Trustees.

So far, only two individuals — Raymond Jay and George McCluskey — have taken out nomination papers for the town council and two others — Fred Grant and Karter Kenney — have expressed a desire to run for school board.

Jay and McCluskey are new to the political scene, while Grant and Kenney are presently serving on the RSU 29 school board.

As of Monday evening, none of the individuals had filed their paperwork, according to Cathy O’Leary, Houlton town clerk/assistant town manager.
