Houlton Band of Maliseets holds recognition day

Native Americans gathered Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians’ tribal grounds for the 36th annual Recognition Day celebration.

Recognition Day is held each year to commemorate the anniversary of HBMI becoming a federally recognized tribe. On Oct. 10, 1980, the federal government officially classified the Houlton Band of Maliseets as a Native American tribe.

Children’s games, hayrides, drumming, dancing and live music were offered, as well as numerous vendors selling Native American crafts and food. The day concluded in the Maliseet Gym with a community feast.
