Students welcome RCV group

HODGDON, Maine — Brian Fitzpatrick’s political science students at Hodgdon High welcomed representatives from the Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) Committee to class on Sept 8. Finn Melanson and Griffin Johnson from the committee explained the benefits of the proposed change in elections that voters in Maine will have an opportunity to vote on in this November’s referendum ballot.

Information about RCV was delivered to the class in a keynote presentation educating students about how the current system compares with that of the proposed change.

Students also participated in mock election campaign in which the results of the election were tabulated using the traditional plurality election method of today with how it would have gone if the RCV method was used.

Melanson commented that “your students were very impressive in their knowledge of politics and a lot of fun to work with.”

Along with the politics class, students are making preparations to attend the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. in January and fundraising has begun at school. The politics class of 2012 attended the Inauguration four years ago and efforts are being made to get back to that “once-in-a-lifetime event” for the current class.

Anyone that would like to assist the class in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated. Students will be conducting bottle drives – with the first slated for Oct. 1 – and holding various raffles along with other activities.
