HOULTON, Maine — A rough second-half for the Houlton football team, which saw the Shires outscored 33-0, resulted in a lopsided 47-13 loss to Mt. View of Thorndike Friday evening in a rematch of last year’s playoff.
Things started off well for the Shires, as the team forced two turnovers in the first quarter. Houlton forced five Mt. View turnovers in the game, but the Shires also committed four turnovers, one of which resulted in a safety late in the contest.
Shire Austin Brown scored the game’s first touchdown with a long run early in the first quarter. Brown finished with eight carries for 32 yards.
Quarterback Jared Fox carried the ball seven times for 40 yards, while Seth Holston had eight carries for 25 yards. Fox completed four of 11 pass attempts for 65 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Daniel McNally scored Houlton’s only other touchdown with a 29-yard reception in the second quarter.
Houlton coach Brian Reynolds said his game plan coming into the contest was to try to limit turnovers and cause a few on defense. Ultimately, however, it was how well the team executed its fundamentals.
“If we don’t block and we don’t tackle, we can’t win football games,” he said.
