Shires don pink to support cancer awareness

HOULTON, Maine — The normally black and white Houlton Shires were a shade of pink Thursday evening as the team donned special apparel and sold raffle tickets for prizes to support the Bridge To Hope cancer program.

Raffles on the night included a “pink tie blanket”, which was made by Morgan Grant won by Kim Folsom; a painting by Mia Hanning, won by Nancy Lilley; a “planter/wine rack” donated by MacKenzie Hunt, won by Ty Tweedie; and a “Goodie Basket” donated by the boys’ soccer team, won by Rob Foley.

In addition to the raffle, money coming in from the purchase of T-shirts worn by the players. The final amount will be revealed when the donation is presented to representatives from Bridge to Hope on Monday, Oct. 10, between the boys’ game at noon and the girls’ game at 2 p.m.

“The seniors from both teams did 99 percent of the planning for the event,” explained Rob Foley, one of the parents. “A couple of parents helped with the ordering of the shirts and the purchasing of some goods for the basket. I know my daughter, Hannah, started getting things going over a month ago so that they could be well prepared.”
