Boys soccer teams jockeying for berth

Hopes for an undefeated season were dashed for the Hodgdon boys soccer team Saturday, as the Hawks lost for the first time this fall.

As of Tuesday morning, the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points Standings reveal Hodgdon (9-1, 47.4490 Heal Points) is ranked fifth in Class D North, behind Fort Fairfield (11-0, 101.8367), Ashland (7-2-2, 81.3010), Woodland (11-0, 59.6769) and Bangor Christian (9-0, 56.9388).

Also in Class D, East Grand (3-5-2, 21.6071) is 11th; Southern Aroostook (5-4, 19.0816) is 13th; and Katahdin (0-11-1, 3.4694) is 20th. The top 14 teams in this region make the playoffs.

In Class C North, Houlton (7-2, 37.2959 Heal Points) was in fourth place as of Tuesday morning, according to the MPA Heal Points standings. The Shires are behind top-ranked Orono (8-1, 55.9694), No. 2 Central of East Corinth (8-1, 50.4082) and No. 3 Washington Academy (8-0, 39.5323). The top 11 teams make the playoffs, with the top five squads earning a first-round bye.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday that were reported to the newspaper.

Ashland 5, Hodgdon 0 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Kyle Beaulier booted in three goals as Ashland defeated previously unbeaten Hodgdon. Lucas Craig had a goal and two assists and Mason Deabay a goal for the Hornets.

Steven Bellanceau had six saves on nine shots. Josh Foster saved 14 of 21 shots for 9-1 Hodgdon.

Lee Academy 0, Houlton 10 — At Houlton Thursday, Pat Howe had three goals and an assist as Houlton rolled past Lee Academy. Jaron Gentle, Abe Lorom, Jacob Worthley, Keegan Gentle, Nolan Porter, Nick Perfitt and Alex Wilde all added goals for Houlton.

A.J. Henderson saved all five shots.

Katahdin 0, Schenck 6 — At East Millinocket Thursday, Travis Thompson had a goal plus an assist to lead Schenck past Katahdin. Kody Pelletier, Chris King, Nick Powers, Mitchell McDunnah and Dylan Danforth added goals for the Wolverines. Justin Thompson saved both shots.

Tanner Lane saved 13 of 28 shots for Katahdin.

Houlton 4, Lee Academy 2 — At Lee Sept. 27, Abe Lorom had two goals as Houlton knocked off Lee Academy. Pat Howe and Jacob Worthley added goals for 6-2 Houlton. A.J. Henderson had 10 saves on 12 shots.

Lincoln Gallant and Huong Chu had the goals for the Pandas. Matty Knowles had 18 saves on 21 shots for 4-3 Lee.

Katahdin 0, Hodgdon 2 — At Hodgdon, Sept. 27 the Hawks get two goals from Wyatt Foster in the first half of the game. Daden Palmer had the assist on both goals.

Katahdin keeper Tanner Lane made 15 saves on 23 shots and Hodgdon keeper Josh Foster made 8 saves on 10 shots.

Southern Aroostook 0, Ashland 2 — At Ashland Sept. 27, the Hornets’ Lucas Craig scored what proved to be the game winner on a penalty kick seven minutes into the first half. The score remained 1-0 for most of the game until Alex Kaiser scored on a pass from Dylan Haley with eight minutes left in the second half.

Ashland keeper Steven Bellanceau recorded his third shutout of the year by making seven saves on 12 shots. Nolan Altvater and Steven Rackliff combined for three saves on 13 shots for Southern Aroostook.

Ashland is now 6-2-2 on the season while the Warriors fall to 4-4.
