100 Years Ago – Oct. 11, 1916
Picking — Messrs. Wm. Riley and Maurice Kelley, of Tignish, P. E. I., who have been picking potatoes in the upper part of The County, have completed their work and returned to Houlton. These gentlemen during five days last week each picked up 588 barrels, and on Friday the tally was 136 barrels for each.
A place to bowl — The grand opening of the Bowlodrome will take place on Thursday evening. Messrs. Flemming and Niles have spared no pains nor expense to make the new pleasure resort a place where clean games will be conducted – bowling, pool and billiards – and already a large number have visited the rooms and express themselves as much pleased that such a place has been opened.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1941
New job — Miss Janet Nevers left recently for Washington, D.C., where she has accepted a position in the War Department.
Red Cross — The Red Cross conference in Houlton Friday was attended by the local chairman, Rev. H.B. Robinson, Mrs. Jessie Murphy, Mrs. Hazel Baker, Mrs. Edna Lord, Mrs. Gertrude Sprague and Mrs. Violette White.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 12 , 1966
Award — George W. Burpee, a 1900 graduate of Ricker Classical Institute and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Burpee, longtime Houlton residents, will be honored Tuesday night in Philadelphia as the 1966 recipient of the ‘Award of Merit’ presented each year by the American Institute of Consulting Engineers. The award goes to an outstanding figure in engineering or science.
Trip — Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dahlgren of Blaine leave today to go to Los Angeles where they will attend the convention of Congressional Medal of Honor heroes. Mr. Dahlgren is the only living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II in the state of Maine.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1991
60 years together — A surprise 60th anniversary celebration was conducted Sept. 14 in honor of Stephen and Gertrude Peabody’s wedding anniversary at their apartment in Littleton.
80 years — Residents of Ricker Plaza celebrating birthdays of 80 years-plus were: Lenora Pryor, Fern Drake, Flossie Gibson, Wendell Lycette, Julia Little, Olive Shaw, Cathryn Ivey, Emma Sanders, Mabel York, Gladys Boulier, Mattie Watson, Vashti Clement, Dorthea Metzger, Lloyd Hotham, Gladys Brewer, George Gentle, Bernice Fitzpatrick and Walter Dawson.
