The Cary Library is partnering with the Maine Folklife Center to present a program entitled, “Threads of Our Lives: Maine Folk Fiber Art,” on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The lecture-demonstration program features Maine-based fiber artists. Swedish Huck weaver Carolyn Hildebrand will be talking about Swedes in Maine and Huck weaving. She will bring samples of her work as well as cloth for audience participation learning Huck embroidery.
Members of The Valley Crafters, a group of weavers from Fort Kent, will bring a floor and table loom with projects on them as well as samples of their work.
They will speak about their northern Maine weaving traditions including some Acadian and Canadian influences. Katrina Wynn, an archivist and humanities specialist from the Maine Folklife Center will also be present. The presenters will be discussing Maine fiber arts traditions and practices and will be demonstrating techniques in an informal give- and-take with the audience.
“Threads of Our Lives,” is part of a special project funded by the Maine Arts Commission and the Cary Library has four large panels depicting the project on display.
