HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Salvation Army will not be closing the doors of its Pleasant Street Thrift Store after all.
Lt. Elizabeth Nicoll said Monday morning that although the building they have rented for several years remains for sale, the group will not have to shutter its doors immediately. Store officials had been told they had to clear out by Sept. 30, but have now been given the go-ahead to remain on site.
The property went up for auction in late September, but did not sell.
Nicoll, who serves as the leader of the Houlton branch of the Salvation Army with her husband Dominic, said the Salvation Army had actually been searching for a new location for its popular Thrift Store for some time, due to the deteriorating condition of the Water Street property.
We are open and accepting donations. We are still looking into another store to purchase, but we don’t know how long that could take,” Nicoll said. “Until we hear otherwise from the new owner’s we are staying there until we move.”
The Salvation Army Thrift Store, located on 2 Pleasant St., is now accepting donations of gently used items. The store is open Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
